Description

Pathogen was one of several horrific experiments set loose on the world, from a medical division of Khemical Labs Inc.  Five years ago, Barbara Norris (no relation to Chuck Norris) was admitted to a hospital for treatment of a serious illness, which turned out to be terminal.  Khemical Labs doctors said they could cure her disease, but six months later, told her parents that there wasn't enough time, and that she had passed.  They even took her parents in to see their daughter, but provided a dead clone instead of the real Claire.

Barbara's disease was a rare condition which could be spread under special circumstances, and she was the only one who Khemical Labs knew had contracted that disease.  They took her to extract the disease for experimental purposes for new biological weapons.  Artemis Khem herself oversaw numerous operations and augmentations the scientists performed on her body, imbuing her with power via viral infection.
